Sprains and ligament injuries

The ankle ligaments are essential for joint stability. Sprains and ligament injuries are among the most common injuries, especially in athletes.

Causes

Ankle sprains and ligament injuries are often caused by direct trauma or sudden, forceful movements, such as those that occur during sports activities. The severity of the injury depends on the type of trauma sustained, ranging from simple ligament stretching to complete rupture.

Symptoms

The main symptoms include localized pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the joint. In case of ligament rupture, the pain can be intense and immediate.

Diagnosis and Treatments

Diagnosis is based on a physical examination that assesses joint mobility and stability and can be supported by imaging tests such as X-rays or MRI to rule out fractures and assess ligament damage. Treatment varies depending on the severity of the injury. In mild cases, rest, ice application, immobilization, and physical therapy may suffice. In severe injuries, ligament reconstruction surgery may be necessary.

Complications

If not properly treated, a severe sprain or ligament injury can lead to chronic ankle instability, increasing the risk of future injuries and limiting joint functionality.
