Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a systemic and metabolic disease of the skeletal system, which occurs in the elderly and with a higher incidence in women.

13-15 %

The percentage of osteoporotic fractures involving proximal humerus fractures.

x2

The risk of fracture doubles every 10 years after age 50.
Causes

A systemic skeletal disorder with reduced bone density and strength. They are more frequent in postmenopausal women and the elderly.

Symptoms

Usually asymptomatic until a fracture occurs (typically proximal humerus). Sudden pain and loss of function after minimal trauma.

Diagnosis and Treatments

Diagnosis with DEXA and post-trauma x-rays. Depending on the type of fracture, it is possible to resort to conservative treatments or to surgery in more complex situations.

Complications

Fragility fractures, reduced function, and increased risk of future fractures.
