Osteonecrosis of the talus
Osteonecrosis of the talus is a condition characterized by cellular death of bone tissue due to insufficient blood supply (reduced vascularization).
Causes
Osteonecrosis of the talus occurs when blood supply to the talus is compromised, leading to the death of bone cells. Common causes include trauma, vascular diseases, or prolonged use of medications such as corticosteroids.
Symptoms
The main symptoms include persistent ankle pain, joint stiffness, and limited mobility.
Diagnosis and Treatments
Diagnosis is based on clinical examination and diagnostic tests such as MRI or CT scans, which allow visualization of bone damage. Treatment depends on the degree of bone damage. In early cases, conservative therapies such as rest, medications, and physical therapy may be used. In advanced cases, surgery such as bone grafting or joint replacement may be required.
Complications
If left untreated, osteonecrosis can lead to permanent joint deformity, osteoarthritis, and reduced joint functionality.
